Maser

For this elective, we built a systemic interface called “Maser” that contains controls for audio and light. The final design consists of two devices, with the open possibility of adding many more with new functionalities. Through the first device of the interface, users can select and start playing music, control the volume and pause their audio. A second unit contains the light controls, which allows users to set the brightness and preset of their smart lights. When the units are clicked together, a new scrolling wheel appears which allows for browsing between “atmospheres” of light and music joined together. Dependent on the order of the connected units, either light or sound is prioritized in the atmosphere selection. We put a strong focus on the interactions, which were meant to be rich and embodied (Frens, 2006).
